The Rabbit's journey to fourth place in the zodiac is a story of humility – a lesson learned the hard way.
In the origin story of the zodiac, the Rabbit was proud and arrogant about his speed. He was neighbors with the Ox and often made fun of him for being so slow.
On the day of the great race, the Rabbit set off at dawn. When he reached the river, no other animals were in sight. In his arrogance, he assumed he had already won. He lay down and took a nap.
When he woke up, three other animals – including the Ox he had mocked – had already crossed the river. Panicking, the Rabbit hopped across stepping stones but slipped and fell into the water. He grabbed onto a floating log, and the Dragon, flying overhead, took pity on him. The Dragon blew air from his nose to push the log safely to shore.
The Rabbit finished fourth – not because of his speed, but because of a Dragon's kindness.
What the Rabbit Represents
The Rabbit is a symbol of gentleness, elegance, and kindness. In Chinese mythology, the Jade Rabbit lives on the Moon with the goddess Chang'e, pounding medicine for the immortals. According to Beijing folklore, the Jade Rabbit once came down to Earth to save people from a plague.
