The Dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac – and he came in fifth. But his position has nothing to do with a lack of power.
In the great race, the Dragon could have easily flown to the finish line first. But he was delayed because he kept stopping to help others along the way.
He saw the Rabbit struggling in the water, clinging to a log. The Dragon blew a puff of breath to push the log safely to shore. He also stopped to help people and creatures on Earth who were in need.
Another legend tells a different story: the Dragon originally had no horns. He borrowed a pair of beautiful horns from the Rooster to appear more powerful before the Jade Emperor. After winning his place in the zodiac, the Dragon never returned the horns – which is why Roosters are still angry about it today.
What the Dragon Represents
Unlike the fearsome dragons of Western mythology, the Chinese Dragon is an auspicious creature that symbolizes strength, wisdom, and good luck. He rules over wind, clouds, rain, lightning, and thunder. In Chinese culture, the Dragon represents imperial authority, divine blessings, and fortune.
