The Legend
The story of the Chinese zodiac begins with a great race, and at its center is the smallest, most unlikely champion: the Rat.
According to legend, the Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven, decided to create a calendar and invited all the animals to participate in a race to determine their order. The first twelve to cross the finish line would be honored with a year named after them.
The Rat knew he couldn't outrun the bigger, stronger animals. So he used his wits. He struck a deal with the Ox, the kindest and most hardworking of all the animals. "Let me ride on your head," the Rat suggested. "I'll keep you company as we cross the river." The Ox, being good-natured, agreed.
As they reached the shore, the Rat leaped from the Ox's head and dashed across the finish line first. The Ox, stunned, could only settle for second place.
But there's more to this story. Before the race, the Rat and the Cat were best friends. The Cat, who loved to sleep in, asked the Rat to wake him on race day. The Rat agreed but, fearing the Cat might steal his glory, left without him. When the Cat woke up and realized what had happened, he was furious. He's been chasing Rats ever since.
