The Legend
If the Rat won the great race through cunning, the Ox earned his place through sheer determination and kindness.
On the day of the Jade Emperor's race, the Ox woke early and began his journey. He was a natural swimmer and reached the river with ease. When he encountered the Rat at the water's edge, he didn't hesitate to help. He offered the Rat a ride on his head – a simple act of kindness that would cost him first place.
As they neared the finish line, the Rat jumped off the Ox's back and sprinted ahead. The Ox, honest and trusting to the end, had been outsmarted. He finished second.
In another version of the legend, the Ox led the way to meet Emperor Xuanyuan, who ranked the first animal he saw at the top. Once again, the Rat managed to jump ahead at the last moment.

The Ox symbolizes hard work, reliability, and honesty. In Chinese culture, the Ox is deeply respected as the animal that helped humans cultivate the land. One legend even says the Ox was crowned the God of Soil and Food, having stolen seeds from Heaven to free humans from hunger.
